Your skin is made up of three layers – the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The epidermis is the thinnest layer but the most important when it comes to protecting your body from outside attacks. It is made up of five layers of its own – each of which has a different role in protecting you from the harsh environment.
The dermis is the middle layer and the layer that is responsible for wrinkles. It contains hair follicles, blood vessels, and sebaceous (oil) glands. This layer contains the proteins collagen and elastin that we harness to improve the firmness and elasticity of your skin. The hypodermis (or subcutis) is the layer that “anchors” the dermis and epidermis and as this layer weakens with age, the skin will begin to sag. The treatment discussed today has a minimal impact on the hypodermis, but there are other medical grade procedures we can provide to bolster this part of the skin.
Collagen is the predominant protein in the dermis – making up approximately 75 percent of your skin. It is responsible for warding off fine lines and wrinkles and naturally decreases as you age and your skin is damaged by the environment. The other major protein – elastin does exactly what it sounds like it does – it is the elastic in your skin that helps it to bounce back.
Miracle treatment
Now that you have the basics – let’s discuss this miracle treatment that harnesses your own body’s repair processes. This treatment is commonly referred to as skin needling but has also been called Microneedling, collagen induction therapy (CIT), and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI). In this procedure, a handheld device containing needles is used to cause a controlled injury to the skin. The body then jumps to action to repair the damage by creating new collagen and elastin to fill the channels created by the needle injury – resulting in a thicker and healthier dermis and epidermis. The technique also allows for easier absorption of topical medications. Because the skin’s outer layer, the epidermis, remains intact during this procedure it can be repeated if needed.
This treatment offers many benefits to health-conscious consumers. Acne and ageing are obviously not conscious choices, but sun exposure is, and this treatment can help reverse the damage from all of these processes. Young adults can get relief from self-esteem reducing acne scars without significant cost or risk and enhance their appearance as they enter the job market. Older adults can shelve their regrets about too much time in the sun or the inevitable appearance of too many lines and wrinkles that come from any life well lived.
