The skin is cleaned and shaved prior to laser hair removal treatment. The use of a topical anaesthetic is optional.
When treating the upper lip, the teeth may be protected with moist white gauze. The gauze also serves to support the lip during treatment, allowing a surface to push against.
The DCD (cryogen cooling device) or Zimmer (cool air), will be used with the laser to cool the skin during treatment.
Safety considerations are important during the laser hair removal procedure at our Darwin clinic. Protective eyewear will be worn by the patient and all personnel in the treatment room during the procedure to reduce the chance of damage to the eye. In addition, your provider will take all necessary precautions to ensure your safety.
Ensure the skin is cleaned and SHAVED PRIOR to treatment.
Avoid the sun 4-6 weeks before and after treatment until your healthcare provider allows it. Epidermal melanocytes compete with melanin in the hair.
Your provider may ask you to stop any topical medications or skin care products 3-5 days prior to treatment.
You MUST avoid bleaching, plucking or waxing hair for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment. The melanin- containing hair must be present in the follicle as it is the “target” for the laser light.
If you have had a history of peri-oral or genital herpes simplex virus, your provider may recommend a prophylactic antiviral therapy. Follow the directions for your particular antiviral medication.
If you have a tan or have a darker skin type, a bleaching regimen may be started 4-6 weeks before treatment.
RECENTLY TANNED SKIN CANNOT BE TREATED! If treated within 2 weeks of active (natural sunlight or tanning booth) tanning, you may develop hyperpigmentation (dark spots) followed by hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment and this may not clear for 2-3 months, up to 12 months in some cases.
The use of self-tanning skin products must be discontinued two weeks before treatment. Any residual self-tanner should be removed prior to treatment.
Immediately after the laser hair removal treatment, there should be erythema (redness) and edema (swelling) of each hair follicle in the treatment site, which may last up to 2 hours, or longer. The erythema may last up to 2-3 days. The treated area will feel like sunburn for a few hours after treatment.
Your provider may use an optional cooling method after treatment to ensure your comfort.
A topical soothing skin care product such as Flamigel®/Aloe Vera may be applied following treatment if desired.
Makeup may be used immediately after the laser treatment for hair removal as long as the skin is not irritated.
Avoid sun exposure for a minimum 2 weeks to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation (darker pigmentation). Use a sunblock (SPF 30+) at all times throughout the course of treatment. Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin. Do not use any other hair removal treatment products or similar treatments (waxing, electrolysis or tweezing) that will disturb the hair follicle in the treatment area for 4-6 weeks after the laser treatment is performed. Shaving may be used.
Anywhere from 5-14 days after the treatment, shedding of the treated hair may occur and this appears as new hair growth. This is NOT new hair growth. You can clean and remove the hair by washing or wiping the area with a wet cloth or Loofah sponge. This is dependent on individual responses and hair growth.
After the axilla (underarm) is treated, you may wish to use a powder instead of a deodorant for 24 hours after the treatment to reduce skin irritation.
There are no restrictions on bathing except to treat the skin gently, as if you have had sunburn, for the first 24 hours.
Return to the clinic or call for an appointment at the first sign of the return of hair growth. This may occur within 4 weeks for the upper body and possibly as long as 2-3 months for the lower body. Hair regrowth occurs at different rates on different areas of the body. New hair growth will not occur for AT LEAST three weeks after treatment.
Remember your treatment GOAL is 80% permanent HAIR REDUCTION! MAINTENANCE sessions will be required. Book now and discover the benefits of permanent laser hair removal.
How long do treatments take?
Treatment times vary from person to person, but for a small area (underarm, face, upper lip) one treatment will take around 5 minutes. Chest or arms will take 10 minutes.
How many treatments will I require?
Hair growth is reduced after each treatment and the number of treatments required will be based on your hair colour and type, body area and skin tone.
How much does laser hair removal cost?
If you are used to painful, cheap IPL hair reduction then you will notice the cost of laser hair removal is higher as it is a far superior treatment with virtually no pain and faster results.
When is the best time to have laser hair removal?
We can remove your unwanted hair any time you are ready. The most popular time is during Winter. Avoiding sun exposure or a sun tan can be hard to do in Summer.
Is laser hair removal the same as IPL hair removal?
No, however many clinics in Darwin will market cheap IPL as laser hair removal, so it pays when comparing prices to ask if they use a GentleLase Pro or an IPL (intense pulsed light) device for hair removal. The main reason we hear that people don’t go back for a second treatment is because they tried IPL hair removal and found it too painful. Time to come into Cosmetic Injectables for true laser hair removal!
How should I prepare for my laser hair removal treatment?
Avoid sun exposure at least two weeks before your treatment. Do not bleach, pluck or wax 4 to 6 weeks before and after your treatment.
